Support Spotlight: Beyond Barriers
Beyond Barriers: Empowering Individuals Through Support and Independence
At Beyond Barriers, a dedicated team of professionals is working tirelessly to help individuals with disabilities live independently and find the support they need to thrive in their communities. The team’s compassion and commitment to the mission are evident through the voices of staff members who share their insights on why they are passionate about the work they do.
Janica Downing, Independent Living Specialist
Janica Downing has been a part of Beyond Barriers since June of 2024. Her favorite aspect of helping others is seeing the smile on their faces when they secure housing and the services they need. "I know what it's like to feel helpless and alone, and I don't want anyone to feel that way," she explains. For Janica, the most important thing to remember is that everyone deserves basic needs. "Don’t judge people. Give them a chance," she encourages.
Heather Jones, Independent Living Coordinator
With an impressive 23 years at Beyond Barriers, Heather Jones’ passion for her work is unwavering. As an Independent Living Coordinator, Heather loves helping individuals achieve their goals of living independently in their communities. "It is rewarding meeting so many different individuals, being a part of their support system, and celebrating with them when they achieve their goals," she says. Heather reminds the public that everyone deserves the right to live their life as they choose, regardless of their disability. "We are all people from various backgrounds, and we should not judge or criticize others."
Nicole Scott, Independent Living Specialist
Having worked at Beyond Barriers for 6.5 years, Nicole Scott finds joy in the happiness expressed by individuals when they meet their goals, particularly when they find stable housing. "It's incredibly rewarding to see how their lives change for the better," she says. Nicole emphasizes that Beyond Barriers serves people with all disabilities free of charge, and no documentation of the disability is required. "Everyone deserves the support they need, and we are here to provide it," she adds.
Together, the staff at Beyond Barriers is committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the resources and support to live independently and with dignity. Their work is a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of providing equal opportunities for all.
