Our board members are dedicated leaders committed to strengthening our community. In this section, you'll learn more about what inspires Randy to serve on the United Way of Reno County board and his vision for the future of our organization.
What motivates you to serve on the board of United Way of Reno County?
The United Way provides resources to numerous organizations throughout the county, and it is an honor to be on the board. My motivation is the ability be a part of such an impactful and meaningful organization. I have given to United Way campaigns for years, but being on the board gives special meaning and understanding to where that money gets allocated.
What’s one local cause or issue in Reno County that you're particularly passionate about?
I feel the Reno Connections offered by the United Way is an initiative that has been missing in this community and will be a model for other communities. This is something that I am passionate about, as I have seen people numerous times not have the connections or understand the process required to navigate around issues that many of us view as routine, such as how to get a new drivers license or know where to go when help is needed. This program is one I feel the community should be proud of and we need to find a way to make sure that it has long-term funding.
What do you believe is the biggest impact that United Way can have in our community?
The biggest impact is to make a positive difference in someone’s life, which is done every day by the various agencies that receive allocations and by the United Way organization itself.
What’s your favorite way to spend a Saturday in Reno County?
Relaxing with my wife and pets while relaxing at home is one way to spend a Saturday. We also like to see what events are taking place in town and stroll around the area. Sporting events at the college, if a game is taking place is another way to spend a Saturday in Reno County.
What’s a moment or experience during your time with United Way that has left a lasting impression on you?
Serving on the allocation committee was great because I got to hear from every group telling their heartfelt stories of why they were asking for funds from the Unite Way. The stories from each group were impactful. In addition to the allocation committee, hearing stories from people helped by United Way is inspiring, such as the great work by United Way to help the families who lost their homes during the Cottonwood Fires.
How do you like to give back to your community outside of your role with United Way?
Serving as the county administrator, I feel that my work everyday is related to making the community better. In addition to work at the county and serving on the United Way board, I am also a member of the Hutchinson Rotary Club and Hutchinson AMBUCS club, providing additional opportunities to be active in the community. Being active in the community is important to me.
